Table 25.2: Time Log

Here is a very simple time log to use. Every time you start, finish, or change activities, write down the time and the nature of the activity.

Keep the log for at least a week. At the end of the week, look at your patterns of activity. How many jobs did you start? How many did you finish? What kept you from finishing the jobs? If you’ve written down everything you did during the week, you should be able to see at a glance how you are spending your time and when and how you are being interrupted or change activities.

  • Are you grouping jobs for maximum efficiency?
  • Are your methods or equipment up-to-date and adequate for your needs?
  • Did you tend to spend time daydreaming instead of working?
  • Did you spend a lot of time looking for things?
  • Did you spend more time organizing your work or your work space than doing work?
  • Did you delegate business or personal chores to others, or did you let others delegate their chores to you?
  • Did you put off starting big, important jobs while you got lots of little chores out of the way?
  • Did you have to run to the store frequently for business or personal items you forgot to buy?
  • Did you do things for other people you really didn't want to do?
  • Did you spend a lot of time worrying about problems?
What do I do with the log after I’ve made it?

At the end of the week review your notations. Consider which things helped you to achieve long- or short-range goals and which didn't. Determine what kinds of activities or interruptions got in the way of reaching your goals. Among the things to watch for: How many jobs did you start? Did all of them have to be done? How many did you finish? What kept you from finishing the jobs? If you've written down everything you did during the week, you should be able to see at a glance how you are spending your time and when and how you are being interrupted or change activities.

Once you identify time-wasting activities, you can improve your efficiency by adapting some of the suggestions in the next chapter.
