Can people who don't have a lot of contacts or a lot of corporate management experience build satisfying and successful businesses from home?

Yes! They may not be able to build a profitable business overnight, but if they are patient and build the business slowly, don't get discouraged by setbacks and can adapt to change, they can build successful and very satisfying businesses.

Jerry Lunsford, a former backcountry ranger, is one good example. Lunsford was seeking a better way of life when he started his business, Camelid Capers, in 1985. At the time, he was searching for something to do that would keep him outdoors. Camelid Capers, which takes tourists on guided picnic hikes in the Point Reyes National Seashore, was born when Lunsford attended a llama auction in Grants Pass, Oregon, and envisioned tourists leading gear-laden llamas. He bought several llamas and built a series of outings around that theme. "The favorite scenario was lunch on the beach with llamas," Lunsford says.

But then the llamas picked up a parasite in the national park area where the tours operated, and all of them died. Lunsford made some changes in the business and now Camelid Capers provides backcountry catering services to outdoor groups "without the use of the llamas." Lunsford also contracts out his seasonal outdoor activities to a local kayaking company, serving the company as a manager, guide, and webmaster.

What are the benefits of starting a business from home?

The obvious advantage is a reduction in overhead costs. Putting your office in a corner of your home eliminates monthly office rental and utility expenses. In addition, having your business at home may also:
  • provide substantial tax deductions
  • reduce transportation costs
  • eliminate commuting time
  • reduce expenditures for work clothes and lunches out
  • reduce child-care worries and expense
  • reduce interruptions and increase your productivity
  • allow you to work when it is most convenient for you to work
  • minimize involvement with office politics
  • provide better customer service
  • let you take control of your own destiny
